In this article, I will try as much as possible to breakdown using the possible simplest terms all the necessary and basic information you need to be aware of when starting a WordPress website.

Before we go further, I would love to highlight some advantages of choosing WordPress when designing and deploying your website.

What is WordPress?

WordPress as at today remains the simplest and most popular way to create and deploy your own website or blog. Verifiable stats show that over 35% of the sites on the internet today are powered by WordPress technology.

Contrary to the general belief, WordPress can be used to develop not just blogs but a wide range of websites which includes but are not limited to the following:

  • e-Commerce stores
  • Portfolios
  • Social network
  • Forums
  • Business/Corporate websites
  • Blogs and so many more

What are the requirements before I can be able to create a website using WordPress?

Before you can create, host and deploy a website using WordPress, you should have the following things in place:

  • Domain name
  • Hosting plan
  • Website security certificate
  • WordPress theme

WordPress Website – Domain Name

A domain name is simply the name of your website. The web address with which visitors, clients and customers can locate your website. An example is

Decide on a domain name that represents your brand, check for its availability and register it with a domain registrar if it’s available.

There are lots of domain registrars out there to choose from, but I prefer and use for all the websites I developed for my clients and myself because of their level of reliability. You might want to use them for your site because of their outstanding records.

WordPress Website – Hosting Plan

A hosting plan is a server or a computer that holds or stores your websites and all its associated components. It serves the same information to visitors when they send a request through their web browsers.

Just like the case of the domain name. You will also have to make a choice when choosing a hosting plan. Care must be taken to avoid unreliable host providers that will cost you more harm than good.

In addition, based on my experience as a web developer. I strongly recommend you use the same provider for domain registration and hosting to avoid unnecessary synchronization and communications issues.

Luckily, offers cheap Shared hosting plan that can allow you to host up to three sites at the same time. You might want to use them as your domain registrar and host company.

WordPress Website – Website Security Certificate

Popularly known as SSL, this prevents your website from malicious activities such as hacking and other security-related issues. It also shows that your website is trustworthy and can help gain the trust of your visitors and or clients.

WordPress Website – WordPress Theme

A theme is an already made structure, framework and design of a website. With the help of a theme, you can easily create and deploy your website in no time. All you have to do is to modify the theme to suit your needs and style.

How much should be my budget?

Creating and deploying a WordPress website can be very affordable especially if you are a web developer. But on the other hand, you may have to employ the services of a web developer. You can contact me through my portfolio, and I can assure you of a quality and affordable service.

Generally, I will highlight an estimated budget to help you prepare financially before commencing the project. But you must understand that these prices are not fixed because they can change anytime.

  • Domain name – between $8 – $10 on
  • Hosting plan – between $17 – $25 on
  • Website security certificate – between $8 – $10 on, you may get a free SSL if you register your domain with Namecheap.
  • WordPress theme – between $59 – $65 on, for a professional theme.

Getting all these ready means a 70 per cent completion of the task. The next will be to either get a web developer to handle the project or you develop the website yourself.

In summary, there are other installations and configurations that are needed to help your website thrive favourably on the internet.

These includes but are not limited to the following:

  • On-page SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
  • Domain name submission on search engine consoles such as Google, Bing and others.
  • Google website analytics configuration.
  • Website monetization and so on

All these areas are beyond the scope of this article. I will write more article to cover these topics and other related topics. But like I have already mentioned, please feel free to contact me if you are need of any assistance. Kindly share this article with your friends and community.
